There was a small stream next to our campsite. These salmon were spawning. The noise was loud enough for us to hear it where we were parked.

A forest ranger told us where we could find a waterfall that quite often had bears near it fishing for salmon. Soon after we reached the platform, a local couple arrived and told us to turn around and look up in the tree. It seems this bear quite often perches in this "nest." He was asleep when we first saw him. We made some noise which caused the bear to sit up. Then he proceeded to slide down the tree and disappear. It wasn't long before we found him staring us down from the end of the little trail that led to the platform. The man stood up on the bench to make himself look big and made noise. In a little while the bear ambled off. We really weren't scared, but it could have been a problem. If there had been, John had bear spray.

Both of us are intrigued with totem poles so took way too many pictures. The above community house and totems were at Totem Bight State Historical Park. Carol likes the picture of the large bird flying by the totem bird.

We thought this Alaska information was interesting.
