This picture helps you understand why Alaskan people love their state so much. This picture was taken from the main street in Petersburg, and most of the towns have similar views.
Petersburg is known as "Little Norway," since many Norwegians settled here at the turn of the century. This is a replica of the Norwegian ship, Valhalla; and many buildings in town are decorated with Norwegian tole painting.
This boat in the harbor must have been in this "slip" for many years, judging by the algae and other growth. It really looked out of place amongst the nicer boats around it. However, this must be the Alaskan way of life. It is the same with motor vehicles. You see them abandoned all over the state. They do not have a good means of disposing of them.
