At the suggestion of John's cousin, JoNell, we drove a few miles off the highway to the Russian settlement of Nikolaevsk. The ancestors of these settlers left Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and first settled in Oregon. Then some came to Alaska in 1967. Along the road we found this field of beautiful fireweed flowers and just had to stop and take a picture. The purpose of the side trip was to visit the Russian "Samovar" Cafe. Nina, who owns and operates this restaurant, has a degree in electrical engineering from Russia. She came over a few years ago for a visit and married one of the local men. She has developed quite a reputation as an entrepreneur. She did her best to sell us more than we wanted, and then insisted we dress up, so she could take our picture.
