Driving back to Anchorage we saw this boat high and dry on the mud flats with the tide out. Men were using a piece of machinery to cut a ditch in the mud. Carol went into a visitor center a few miles later to get some information and also asked about this. They are putting in a communication cable.

Also, along the way we visited Portage Glacier. It calves into a small inland lake. There is a small cruise boat that provides an hour trip out to view it. The dark lines are called a median moraine. This is gravel that has been ground up as the glaciers move. A median moraine is formed when two glaciers merge.

This is a closeup of the glacier surface.
